Anorectics
WHAT ARE THEY?
Anorectics are diet pills, developed and marketed to replace amphetamines as appetite suppressants.
EXAMPLES OF ANORECTICS:
- benzphetamie(Didrex)
- diethylproprion(Tenuate, Tepanil)
- fenfluramine(Pondimin)
- mazindol(Sanorex,Mazanor)
- phendimetrazine(Bontril, Prelu-2, Plegine)
- phentermine(Ionamin, AdipexP)
Of these pills, phentermine is the most widely prescribed and most frequently encountered on the illicit market.
EFFECTS
*Short Term Effects*
- Speed up the Central Nervous System(brain & spinal cord)
- Produces many of the effects of amphetamines, but are generally less potent.
- All are controlled substances because of their amphetamine like effects
DANGERS?
- 2 anorectics often used in combination with phentermine(phen-fen combo), fenfluramine & dexfenfluramine, were removed from the US market due to heart valve problems. THE DANGERS WITH THE ABUSE OF THIS CLASS OF DRUGS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF AMPHETAMINES.
- Excessive weight loss is also VERY dangerous.
