Anorectics

WHAT ARE THEY?

Anorectics are diet pills, developed and marketed to replace amphetamines as appetite suppressants.

 

EXAMPLES OF ANORECTICS:

  • benzphetamie(Didrex)
  • diethylproprion(Tenuate, Tepanil)
  • fenfluramine(Pondimin)
  • mazindol(Sanorex,Mazanor)
  • phendimetrazine(Bontril, Prelu-2, Plegine)
  • phentermine(Ionamin, AdipexP)

Of these pills, phentermine is the most widely prescribed and most frequently encountered on the illicit market.

 

EFFECTS

*Short Term Effects*

  • Speed up the Central Nervous System(brain & spinal cord)
  • Produces many of the effects of amphetamines, but are generally less potent.
  • All are controlled substances because of their amphetamine like effects

DANGERS?

  • 2 anorectics often used in combination with phentermine(phen-fen combo), fenfluramine & dexfenfluramine, were removed from the US market due to heart valve problems. THE DANGERS WITH THE ABUSE OF THIS CLASS OF DRUGS ARE SIMILAR TO THOSE OF AMPHETAMINES.
  • Excessive weight loss is also VERY dangerous.

  • Schedule III or IV
